The Field Engineer Intern supports Superintendents, Foremen, and Field Operations teams in the execution of heavy civil construction projects. This internship provides exposure to project coordination, cost tracking, scheduling, safety, quality control, and field documentation.

 

This role is primarily field-based and offers real-time learning in active jobsite environments. Interns gain practical experience in project delivery while developing technical, communication, and leadership skills aligned with Fiore’s culture and operational standards.

 

TOTAL COMPENSATION

$26.83 to $37.60 per hour

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Support

  • Assist with daily field documentation including quantities, production tracking, and reports.
  • Support material procurement efforts including quantity take-off, inventory and quality inspection of materials delivered.
  • Participate in project schedule updates and look-ahead planning.
  • Help coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, and field crews.

Field Operations Coordination

  • Perform site walks with Superintendents to understand project progress and constraints.
  • Assist in production tracking and quantity verification.
  • Support quality control processes, including documenting discrepancies and following up on resolutions.
  • Help track equipment utilization and production performance.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and support adherence to OSHA and company safety standards.
  • Participate in safety meetings, daily huddles, and job hazard analysis reviews.
  • Assist with documentation related to inspections, permits, and compliance requirements.

 

 

Communication & Collaboration

  • Interface professionally with project stakeholders, including field crews, inspectors, and municipal representatives.
  • Support project meetings and help document action items.
  • Communicate effectively across field and office teams.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pursuing a long-term career in construction (as opposed to design)
    • A passion for learning multiple sides of heavy construction, including Civil Construction Management, Project Management, Field Operations and Estimating
    • Intent to return for multiple internships in Civil Construction Management, Project Management, Field Operations and Estimating
    • Ideally, also pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • Strong real-world math skills, as applied in the construction area
    • Skills test to follow
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • A balanced combination of the humility to recognize all there is to learn and listen intently to all stakeholders, as well as the inquisitiveness and confidence to pursue answers and understanding and figure things out when needed
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for the outdoor elements of heavy construction, including extreme weather, extreme heat over long periods, dirt and mud, and hard manual labor
  • Professionalism, including:
    • Superb interpersonal skills at all levels and with all stakeholders
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills
    • Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies
    • Strong work ethic – highly motivated and willing to do what it takes to get the job done right

    • Working knowledge of computers and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Able to sit for extended periods of time in an office environment. Ability to stand for long periods of time when visiting constructions jobsites. Occasionally walking, push, pull and lift boxes/items 25 to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Will be exposed to outside work weather conditions (hot, rain, muddy) and uneven ground conditions. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
