The Estimator plays a key role in the preconstruction phase by preparing accurate and detailed cost estimates for civil construction projects. This position is responsible for reviewing construction documents, analyzing scopes of work, conducting quantity takeoffs, and coordinating with suppliers and subcontractors to develop complete and competitive proposals. The Estimator works closely with clients and internal teams to ensure estimates align with project requirements, historical data, and company goals. Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

TOTAL COMPENSATION

$87,700.00 to $193,500.00

Actual compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity.

 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leverages curiosity, customer service, expertise, and innovation to understand the ins and outs of proposal requests by reviewing construction documents and drawings, scope of work, job walks, and discussions with the client.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with customers throughout the bidding process.
  • Prepares estimates on large and complex projects by calculating a complete quantity takeoff of the scope of work, and assures estimates are accurate and in line with customer needs, expected unit cost history, and profit margins.
  • Manages all aspects of the bidding process on estimates.
  • Prepares detailed proposal specifications and schedule, and coordinates concept drawings that accurately portray the scope of work and requirements of the project for presentation to the owner.
  • Uses knowledge, strong attention to detail and follow-up skills to solicit quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, and organizes, reviews, and completes detailed scopes of work and cost comparisons for each.
  • Assesses problem situations to identify causes, gathers and processes relevant information, generates possible solutions, and makes recommendations and/or resolves the problem
  • Effectively prioritizes projects, needs, and work requests.
  • Maintains files of documents as back-up for estimate figures, including current (accurate) information on unit prices from suppliers.
  • Acts with integrity and in a manner that shows support for the company, its values, and its employees, while maintaining constant focus on meeting and exceeding customer requirements and expectations.
  • Exhibits ongoing commitment to quality by evaluating project-related processes and making necessary changes, using customer input to make improvements, and meeting/exceeding internal and external customer expectations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

            

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • General knowledge of estimating techniques, cost control, and material pricing.
  • Problem solving skills with the ability to assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.
  • Knowledge of assigned discipline (Civil, Demolition, Sitework, Wet Utilities, etc.) estimating techniques, regulatory compliance, and cost control processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, grammatical, and prioritization/time-management skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to do moderate math equations, understand financial concepts, and interpret computerized cost data and systems, engineering drawings, purchase orders, contracts, and other construction documents.
  • Ability to work independently while also possessing a strong team orientation, positive attitude, and excellent customer service skills.
  • Proficiency using Word, Excel, Outlook and Microsoft Project.
  • Ability to multitask and effectively prioritize work requests.
  • Knowledge of B2W Estimate and AGTEK software.

Preferred

  • 5+ years’ experience in an estimating role with projects that include at least some of the following: Sitework and Finish Grading; Demolition & Environmental; Site Utilities; Overlot Grading; Trucking; and/or Recycling.
  • BS degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related field or CCP / CEP Certification.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Primary functions require the physical ability and mobility to work in an office and stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. Occasional bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry or push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight not to exceed 30 pounds.  Some outdoor activity to support field activities is expected; ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time on various terrain, including slopes and uneven ground. The position requires the operation of office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Office environment in office setting, with varying temperatures and extended screen time.
