Job Summary:

The Outside Sales Representative will be responsible for promoting and selling our premium range of building materials to customers in an assigned territory.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement a strategic sales plan to penetrate the market, increase sales, and achieve revenue targets. Identify and prioritize potential customers and projects in the territory.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-lasting relationships with existing and potential customers. Understand their needs, provide exceptional customer service, and effectively communicate the unique value propositions of our building materials.
  • Proactively identify new business opportunities through research, networking, industry events, and referrals. Cultivate leads and convert them into active customers through persuasive and consultative selling techniques.
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of our building materials' features, benefits, and technical specifications. Educate customers and partners about the product portfolio, helping them make informed decisions.
  • Conduct compelling product presentations, showcasing the benefits and applications of our building materials. Conduct on-site demonstrations and address customer inquiries professionally.
  • Effectively negotiate contract terms, pricing, and payment schedules with customers. Ensure successful order closure and oversee the timely processing of sales agreements.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, market developments, and competitor activities. Provide valuable feedback to the management team to refine sales and marketing strategies.
  • Work closely with our Customer Service, Inside Sales, and Purchasing teams to align strategies and ensure a seamless customer experience throughout the sales cycle.
  • In-person attendance is required.

Other Required Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Address customer complaints, provide appropriate solutions and alternatives, and follow up to ensure resolution and customer satisfaction.
  • Attend meetings as necessary to stay informed about company policies, goals, and strategies.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management to support the overall success of the sales department.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds 
  • The position may work outside of normal business hours.    
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or while traveling to job sites.      

Skills/Abilities:

  • Prior sales experience or experience in a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret project plans.
  • Proficient in CRM systems, estimating software, quantity take-off tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Adaptable and flexible, capable of managing multiple tasks in a dynamic environment
  • Team-oriented with a willingness to support others and collaborate effectively.
  • Energetic, professional, and forward-thinking with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates a high level of integrity, work ethic, and commitment to safety standards.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently or collaboratively under tight deadlines.
  • Maintains confidentiality and follows instructions with precision.
  • Represent The Gerken Companies to customers in a professional manner, supporting the company’s goals.     

Education and Experience:

  • Proven Sales Track Record: Demonstrated success in outside sales, preferably in the building materials or construction industry. A track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets is highly desirable.
  • A bachelor's degree in business, marketing, engineering, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Minimum three (3) years of work experience, with construction-related experience preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of sales experience required with building material-related sales preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new accounts and develop and implement a sales plan.
