Nevada Copper (TSX:NCU) is a copper producer and owner of the Pumpkin Hollow copper project. Located in Nevada, USA, Pumpkin Hollow has substantial reserves and resources including copper, gold, and silver. Its two fully permitted projects include the high-grade underground mine and processing facility, which is now in the production stage, and a large-scale open pit project, which is advancing towards feasibility status. 

Purpose of the Position:

The Process Controls Engineer will oversee and implement effective production processes. Responsibilities include designing, implementing, testing, making repairs to process control systems, developing process control strategies, and ensuring that our process comply with industry specifications and regulations.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Troubleshoot problems with control systems, hardware, processes, wiring and PLC/SCADA logic.
  • Proficient with Rockwell Factory Talk computer-based programming.
  • Understand and troubleshoot FLSmidth Blue Box Systems, Rockwell Control Systems.
  • Utilizes PLC/HMI skills and knowledge to resolve problems.
  • Troubleshoot and eliminate control systems issues, implement control projects.
  • Develop all control and monitoring systems conforming to Instrument Society of American (ISA), Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART) and Control Standards International (CSI) protocols and standards.
  • Analyze process systems using current and historical data, to identify problems and opportunities.
  • Interface with equipment vendors and contractors to troubleshoot and resolve Control issues.
  • Develop and document new PLC control systems from concept to Implementation.
  • Understand Process Control issues and develop control solutions to enhance Process with Operations, Metallurgical and Maintenance Support
  • Reverse engineer current systems and programs for performing failure recovery.
  • Maintain configuration control of current Program Logic Controller (PLC), Supervisor Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA), Human Machine Interface (HMI), Distributed Control Systems (DCS) source code.
  • Maintain instrument performance, perform troubleshooting of instruments and calibration of instruments as required.
  • Offer controls engineering support to Plant Operations.
  • Respond to Downtime events impacting Production.
  • Plans preventive maintenance for Control Systems
  • Coordinates with others to determine system malfunctions and implement solutions.
  • Provides technical assistance as needed by internal customers.
  • Analyze plant processes, design, and implement improvements.
  • Improve plant process controls by working with Metallurgists, Operations and Maintenance.

  • Ability to ensure adherence to safety standards and regulations.
  • Support the site safety culture through leadership and regularly engaging with and holding the workforce accountable for safe work practices.
  • Participate in regular plant inspections to identify and record safety issues and process improvement opportunities.

Knowledge/Education:

The Process Controls Engineer must be technically proficient with the following attributes and must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Process Controls, Electrical, Engineering, Mechanical, Computer or in an industry-related field of specialization required.
  • Five (5) – ten (10) years of experience in projects involving mining/mineral processing.
  • Knowledge and experience with all types of process instrument flowmeters, densitometers, limit switches, level sensors, control values.
  • Programming experience using Boolean, ladder logic, graphics building, fuzzy logic.
  • Knowledge of all phases of copper processing as it pertains to associated equipment.
  • Proficient and experience developing policies and procedures for the organization.
  • Proficient of electrical, instrumentation, and SCADA systems in an industrial environment, required.

Physical Demands:

The incumbent must demonstrate the following physical demands:

  • Lift and potentially carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Operate a vehicle with a valid driver’s license
  • Climb stairwells and be capable of working on elevated platforms
  • Walk on uneven ground
  • Periodically work in adverse weather conditions
  • Sit for extended periods of time
  • Stay alert during periods of inactivity
  • The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
  • The ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hand, and wrists.

Work Schedule and Personal Protective Equipment:

The incumbent is expected to work a minimum 40 hour/week schedule. Personal Protective Equipment required and to be worn for the field work portion of this position includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots.  All equipment must be MSHA approved as applicable.
