Job description

Purpose and Scope

Mechanics fulfill an important role in the success of the Company. They provide hands-on leadership to the field crews and ensure jobs are completed on schedule – from the layout preparation phase through final installation and testing. Additionally, they provide vital communications from the job site to management. They provide direction and supervision to Apprentices, Journeymen, and Helpers for the installation of a comprehensive range of commercial piping (Plumbing/Piping) and HVAC systems (Sheet Metal) and related equipment as specified by each job and according to drawings. They ensure the quality of finished products. Because the mechanical contracting and construction industry is occasionally dependent upon uncontrollable economic factors, mechanics may be assigned to projects or tasks in other departments as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive at the job site on time and leave at the end of the designated workday.
  • Comply with and enforce Company policies as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Positively represent the Company through personal appearance, professionalism, and exemplary work performance.
  • Plan and organize the worksite to meet priorities, goals and workforce-hour allocation.
  • Provide clear instructions to subordinates and ensure work is done correctly.
  • Perform all work accurately according to Company standards and industry practices.
  • Perform work according to applicable codes and drawings.
  • Ensure that change orders are communicated appropriately between the office and the field and that timely adjustments/changes are made as necessary.
  • Ensure adherence with safety regulations and policies and guide inexperienced workers in proper use of PPE and safe operation of hand and power tools.
  • Identify and implement cost-effective procedures and workflow as appropriate.
  • Properly care for and maintain Company-owned property, i.e. vehicle is maintained, tools, equipment, and materials properly secured and locked at the end of each day, etc.
  • Interpret and apply mechanical and structural blueprints during layout.
  • Implement solutions to problems by involving the effected trades/groups, gathering information and analyzing the situation.
  • Maintain a safe, cooperative, and healthy work environment.
  • Conduct standardized performance evaluations of assigned subordinates.
  • Organize the job and day to day operations – order materials, schedule equipment, and workforce in advance.
  • Participate in training to gain additional knowledge (formal and informal).
  • Coordinate work with other crews, subs and job site superintendent, as required.
  • Communicate appropriately with supervisors regarding job issues, requests for sick or vacation leave or other job-related matters.
  • Attend and participate in required meetings.
  • Assist with jobs/tasks within the Company to adjust for workflow changes.
